Dallas Willard said, “The greatest issue facing the world today, with all its heartbreaking needs, is whether those who... are identified as ‘Christians’ will become disciples– students, apprentices, practitioners– of Jesus Christ, steadily learning form him how to live the life of the Kingdom of Heaven into every corner of human existence.”
What do you think? Is that a valid assessment of the “Church”? I believe it strikes at the heart of what is keeping the “church” anemic and powerless in our world today. Soooo many are Christian in name only. Their Monday life looks different than their Sunday testimony. The saddest part of all is that most seem to think that is okay!
As I mentioned in a sermon last month, “We are not in this life to ‘test the waters’. We are in it to Make Waves.” Are you making waves? Not in a negative way like so many who call themselves Christian. But allowing the powerful waves of Holy Spirit to wash over your family, your school, your workplace, your church... EVERY area of your influence? If you aren’t, “Why not?” If you are... “Keep it up!”
They’ll know we are Christians by our moral stance? They’ll know we are Christians by our speaking out against evil? They’ll know we are Christians by our church attendance? They’ll know we are Christians by how much we give, work, invest, produce? Paul told the Corinthian church, “If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames (as a martyr) but have not Love, I gain nothing!” I Cor 13.3
They’ll know we are Christians by... our Love! Hear me, Love for EVERYONE! Not just the disenfranchised, the needy, the hurting, the stranger... Love For Each Other too! Especially, Love for those in the family...
The Church is Most attractive to those who desperately need it when they see it as a safe place where people are apprenticing to Jesus. Learning from Him how to live the Kingdom Life and to carry it to every corner of human existence!
